Why I created Manawa Whenua

Connecting whānau to whenua. Strengthening Māori land stewardship.

Manawa Whenua was born from a simple belief — that our people and our whenua belong together.

For generations, our lands have carried the hopes and responsibilities of our tūpuna. Yet too often, the systems surrounding Māori land make it difficult for whānau to remain connected to the whenua that sustains our identity, our wellbeing, and our future.

Through my work as a strategist and systems thinker, I have seen both the immense potential of our whenua and the challenges many Māori land trusts face in governing and administering it well.

Manawa Whenua exists to support this transformation — helping whānau reconnect with their whenua, and supporting land trusts to strengthen the stewardship of the lands entrusted to them.

This kaupapa is about restoring what has always mattered — the living relationships between our people, our whenua, and the futures we are responsible for shaping.

Manawa Whenua exists to help our people reconnect with their whenua and to strengthen the stewardship of the lands entrusted to us.

Manawa Whenua is my way of contributing to the future.

As a Wayfinder

Putting people first, listening deeply, reading the signs, doing the work and acting as one for everyone - is how I want to find our way forward as a community.

As a wayfinder, I will hunt for the first domino, aim for the bulls eye and only invest in what I think will make a difference for our people.

This is the spirit behind Manawa Whenua — helping our people find their way home to the lands that hold their future.

As a Mother

I carry the responsibility of nurturing, protecting and guiding - ensuring the wellbeing of my children, my whānau, my community - and future generations.

We must find our way back to the core collective, of living interdependently as community, of knowing each others' needs and aspirations, and doing what we can to ensure our collective success.

As a mother, the future I want for my own children is the same future I want for all mokopuna — connected to whenua, culture and community.

Manawa Whenua is one way I hope to ensure that my children, and the generations that follow them, remain connected to the whenua that carries our whakapapa and sustains our future.

As a Guardian

I am the land, and the land is me

We all carry the responsibility of nurturing, protecting and enhancing our natural environment for current and future generations.

I imagine a world where my children are conscious about their footsteps, and connected with their super powers - drawing strength from their natural world.

We must take our whenua and our whānau to a whole new level of circular economy, food sovereignty, permaculture, alternative energy and blue and green carbon industries.

Manawa Whenua is part of this responsibility - strengthening the stewardship of our whenua so it can sustain the generations that follow.

As a Builder

I am a builder - creating pathways between people, whenua and the systems that shape our future.

I love to connect people, ideas, and worlds - bringing leaders and communities together, and honouring and respecting diversity whilst holding the platform for equity and inclusion.

I roll up my sleeves and make shit happen - turning architectural concepts into concrete action, laying strong foundations in order to build solutions that endure throughout the generations.

The future of our whenua will depend on the systems we build today.

Through Manawa Whenua, I am helping to build the tools, systems and pathways that support our people to reconnect with and care for their whenua.

Looking Forward

Whenua. Whakapapa. Whānau Futures.

The future of Māori land is not just about ownership - it is about connection, stewardship and intergenerational responsibility.

Through Manawa Whenua, I hope to support a future where our whānau are more connected to their lands, our land trusts are equipped to govern with confidence, and our mokopuna inherit whenua that is thriving.

When our people and our whenua flourish together, the possibilities for our communities are limitless.

Manawa Whenua is my way of contributing to the future.

I believe the answers to many of the challenges our people face already exist within our whenua, our whakapapa and our collective wisdom.

If we reconnect our people with their land and equip our land trusts with the tools and systems they need to thrive - we unlock possibilities that extend far beyond economics.

We restore belonging.
We restore responsibility.
We restore intergenerational prosperity.

This is the world I want to help build - for my children, and for all mokopuna who will inherit the whenua after us.
